Rivulet Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ (DST) Overview
Rivulet’s Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ is a time-based, resource reservation technique that assures zero packet loss and loss variance, in addition to bounded delay with minimal jitter for IP networks, is described. The process is applicable to the wide variety of applications that necessitate these stringent quality guarantees, and is fully operational in environments with legacy routers and switches.

Multiprotocol Label Switching and Rivulet Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ for Quality of Service in IP Networks
When MPLS is used to carry IP packets it can work with DiffServ to support some improvement in QoS. However, MPLS alone cannot guarantee continuous QoS levels needed to support real-time applications. This white paper explains why this is so, and also shows that Rivulet Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ is fully compatible with (and complements) MPLS.

SMPTE Journal: A Real-time Internet Protocol for Loss- and Delay-Sensitive Audio-Video Applications
This paper was originally published in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Journal. It remarks on the challenges of supporting real-time traffic flows, notably loss and delay-sensitive audio-video applications, in wide-area internet protocol (IP) networks. It also describes a relevant protocol with exceptional quality-of-service capabilities... The discussion leads to mention of time-based resource reservation methods, of which autonomous flow scheduling is shown to collectively excel in terms of network utilization, performance attributes, ease of deployment in existing internets and intranets... Concluding comments briefly describe autonomous flow scheduling in relation to MPLS and the OSI seven-layer stack.

The Interrelationship of Forward Error Correction and Rivulet Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ for IP Video Quality-of-Service
This paper examines rectangular error-correction codes in relation to interactive IP video, and describes a complementary time-based resource-reservation protocol that affords exceptional and deterministic (i.e., "hard") QoS. Merits of the two technologies are discussed, concluding with comments on their potential synergy. We recommend that Rivulet Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ be used to remedy major transmission impairments, particularly congestion-based packet loss and delay, since it eliminates the latter while working to very high levels of link utilization. The opportunity then arises to use just enough forward error correction to mitigate physical-layer transmission impairments.

Case Studies and Application Notes

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is committed to exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and superb educational programs. The Center set a goal to vastly improve all three aspects of its mission using high-quality medical video from its new surgical suites.

New York University Medical Center
NYU needed to reliably deliver medical-grade video over their existing IP network. So, NYU needed perfect QoS (Quality of Service). No solution was known to make high-quality real-time video practical on an IP network. "I knew we needed to commit to packet video, and I knew that someone would invent the technology," Mr. Weider (of NYU) said. NYU selected technology from Rivulet Communications, Inc. to deliver medical-grade video over the IP network....NYU inaugurated the system in a surgical training program for 140 visiting surgeons and other medical professionals. After the program, Dr. Christine Ren, the leading Lap-Band surgeon in the US*, commented, "80 surgeons and 60 nurses/coordinators/dieticians were in the audience, and everyone including myself commented on how the quality of the image was the best that they had ever seen. They felt like they were in the operating room."

Wireless Backhaul
Rivulet provides Northern Wireless with an end-to-end solution for hauling T-1s from their BTS all the way to their BSC/MSC locations over Ethernet services provided by the ILEC or another local service provider. Rivulet circuit emulated T-1s can be easily provisioned over the IP/Ethernet network and each T-1 will experience zero packet loss from the BTS to the MSC. Northern's solution from Rivulet will cut backhaul and transport expenses 52% over the next three years. A Rivulet Enabled IP Network with zero packet loss is over 20-times more bandwidth efficient than an IP network using prioritization and over-provisioning for increased QoS. A Rivulet solution also saves Northern real estate and power at the BTS and the MSC.

MPLS Tech Brief
As with queuing mechanisms present in router IP code, MPLS offers various tools that can help address delay, jitter and packet loss, but MPLS does not have tools to eliminate loss or bound jitter. This Tech Brief offers an overview of MPLS and Rivulet Dynamic Synchronization Technology™ (DST), focusing on practical issues such as IP DiffServ to MPLS EXP interoperability and transparency, and implications for RQ.
